  • ̽»¨ÉçÇø University's Master of Science in Athletic Training program stands at the forefront of preparing aspiring athletic trainers for success in the dynamic world of sports medicine. Our comprehensive graduate-level curriculum combines advanced coursework and hands-on clinical experience with cutting-edge research to equip students with the knowledge and skills to excel in athletic healthcare. The MSAT program at ̽»¨ÉçÇø University is highly competitive with application into the program occurring in the spring of each year. There are two routes for admission into the MSAT program: Early Entry and Post-Baccalaureate. 

     

    An athletic trainer is a qualified, allied healthcare professional educated and experienced in the prevention, evaluation, rehabilitation, protection and management of healthcare problems associated with diverse populations. Athletic trainers may be employed in a variety of settings including clinics, high schools, universities, youth and profession sports, performing arts, and businesses (). In cooperation with physicians and other allied healthcare personnel, the athletic trainer functions as a vital link between the physically active environment and the medical community.  

  • The 3+2 master’s level Athletic Training program provides a real-world education for students studying to become certified athletic trainers. Students entering the 3+2 program complete the first three years of the Exercise Science major and begin the master’s portion of the program in their fourth year at ̽»¨ÉçÇø.

    This program allows students to earn both a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and a Master of Science in Athletic Training in just five years. Students take three years of courses in the undergraduate Exercise Science major and spend their senior year taking Athletic Training courses earning their undergraduate in Exercise Science. Students then complete one additional year of master classes and earn their Master of Science in Athletic Training after their fifth year at ̽»¨ÉçÇø.

    Admission Requirements

    The Early Entry (3+2) program allows students to earn their master’s degree in five years. Early Entry students enter ̽»¨ÉçÇø University their first year as Exercise Science majors and complete the application for the master’s program during the spring semester of their third (junior) year. All students applying for the master’s program must complete the Exercise Science bachelor program prerequisite courses listed below. Minimum grade requirements, if any, are denoted for each course.

    By May 31, candidates for admission must:  

    1. Meet the Exercise Science Bachelor Program Prerequisite Course requirements. 
    2. Have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average. 
    3. Complete the Athletic Training Graduate Application online. 
    4. Pass a criminal background check — for current ESS students, this requirement is met via ESS 506. Students who refuse to consent to, or have findings on, the background check that would preclude certification or licensure will not be considered for admission into the program. 
    5. Submit a current resume.  
    6. If the candidate's cumulative undergraduate GPA is under 3.0, submit a personal statement describing their academic and potential career goals. 
    7. Submit proof of 25 observation hours with a certified athletic trainer utilizing the Validation of Observation form.
    8. Meet, with or without accommodations, the MSAT Technical Standards for Admission. 
    9. Submit proof of Current Emergency Cardiac Care certification through a BOC-approved program — information provided by the Program. 

    Applicants may be admitted on a probationary basis if a deficiency is determined. In this case, the applicant must complete the deficiency prior to or at the start of the academic semester. The program reserves the right to review each applicant on a case-by-case basis. 

     

  • Admission Requirements

    The Post-Baccalaureate option allows candidates with a completed bachelor’s degree to apply for admission into the MSAT program. Candidates must complete the prerequisite courses with a grade of a C- or better. Candidates must also complete an admission process.  

    Post-Baccalaureate Prerequisite Required Courses: 

    • Human Based Biology with Lab (4-credit course) 
    • Chemistry with Lab (4-credit course) 
    • Physics (3-credit course)
    • Psychology (3-credit course)
    • Human Anatomy with Lab (4-credit course) 
    • Human Physiology with Lab (4-credit course) 
    • OR two combined Human Anatomy and Physiology courses with Labs
    • Biomechanics (3-credit course)
    • Exercise Physiology with Lab (4-credit course) 
    • Nutrition (3-credit course) 
    • Statistics (3-credit course)  

    Applicants may be admitted on a probationary basis if a course deficiency is determined. In this case, the applicant must complete the deficiency prior to or at the start of the academic semester. The program reserves the right to review each applicant on a case-by-case basis. 

    By May 31, Post-Baccalaureate candidates for admission must: 

    1. Submit official transcripts from an accredited university, with the minimum grade requirements in the prerequisite courses.
    2. Have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
    3. Complete the Athletic Training Graduate Application online.
    4. Pass a criminal background check — information provided by the program. Students who refuse to consent to, or have findings on, the background check that would preclude certification or licensure will not be considered for admission into the program. 
    5. Submit a current resume.
    6. Submit contact information on three professional references.
    7. Complete an interview with the Athletic Training faculty and staff — information provided by the Program.
    8. Submit a personal statement describing their academic and potential career goals.
    9. Submit proof of 25 observation hours with a certified athletic trainer.
    10. Meet, with or without accommodations, the MSAT Technical Standards for Admission.
    11. Submit proof of Current Emergency Cardiac Care certification through a BOC-approved program — information provided by the program.

  • Performance Learning

    Performance Learning is an integral part of ̽»¨ÉçÇø's MSAT program. The MSAT coursework and experiential learning are designed to provide quality didactic, clinical and contemporary education for students wishing to become athletic trainers. Through Performance Learning, students gain valuable, real-world athletic training experiences focused on providing critical care to athletes, enhancing athletic performance and managing best care practices for physically active populations in a variety of settings.

    Board of Certification

    Graduates of our program are well prepared for the Board of Certification (BOC) examination. Through a combination of didactic and practical learning experiences, students acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for success on the BOC examination and success in their careers.

    The is a central location for students to fully immerse themselves in academics through Performance Learning. The modernized space features a state-of-the-art athletic training room, an exercise physiology lab with equipment for research opportunities, and 2,000 square feet of rubberized gym flooring for strength and conditioning, return-to-play assessments and training.

    The Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). This accreditation confirms our program meets rigorous national academic and clinical standards. Graduates are immediately eligible to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) exam.
